All you need to know: benefits, service information and pricing & grooming myths.

All Cats Benefit From Regular Professional Grooming

At Pawfection Pet Service we specialise in providing professionally trained cat grooming services, without sedation, all complete in a feline-exclusive environment. Strictly no dogs are on the premises during cat grooming appointments.

A professionally groomed cat looks, feels and smells fantastic. All year round, a cat with a freshly clean, luxurious soft and shiny coat is an absolute pleasure. A well-groomed cat is a happy cat.

Contrary to popular belief, cats do not groom themselves. Cats lick themselves, cover themselves in their saliva, and ingest their shed hair; which causes problems with hairballs and intestinal blockages.

It is the combination of saliva, the naturally oily coat, and shedding hair that is trapped within the coat, which causes matting.

Matted coats can cause a variety of skin and health problems. Matted fur does not allow for air circulation to the skin causing bacterial and fungal infections. As matting pulls on the skin, it can result in the skin underneath being raw, inflamed and even bruised.

Shed hair and dandruff result in a build-up on furniture, floors and clothing and can cause allergies to people residing or visiting your home.

Regular professional Deshed Treatments eliminate these problems; by keeping your cat’s skin and coat in optimal condition, avoiding matting, and preventing excessive shedding.

Creating a Stress-Free Grooming Experience for Your Cat

It is best to start your cat’s grooming experience from a young age. It is recommended for Kittens to begin their professional grooming journey as soon as they have had their last vaccinations.

The earlier your kitten is introduced to the grooming environment the better. A slow and steady introduction to the process makes it much easier on your pet.

Adult Cats benefit from 4 - 8 weekly grooming, depending on the length and thickness of the coat and the individual grooming needs.

Cats that are professionally groomed on a regular basis are conditioned to the grooming process. This reduces stress and makes it a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for your feline.

The first appointment is a much slower approach to determining how your pet responds to each step of the grooming process. While most cats tolerate the grooming experience quite well, minimising stress is important. Due to temperament and coat condition, the service may need to be broken up over a number of sessions.

All services include a nail trim, warm bath using high-quality feline-specific clarifying shampoos, gentle blow dry, coat brush out and complete Deshed Treatment.

Comb Clip / Lion Clip

For cats who have a full clipping service, it is recommended to have a Deshed treatment in between Clipping Services. This is to avoid mats starting to form and ensure your pet’s coat and skin are kept in top condition. 8, 6, and 4-week servicing is generally alternating regular scheduled grooming services between Deshed Treatments, and Clipping Service as needed.

Soft Paws Nail Caps

Soft Paws are vinyl caps that are glued onto your cats existing nails are a great solution to destructive behaviour and damage from your cats long, sharp nails.

They look like a cats nail, only hollow. As they do not affect the cats ability to use their nails, they tolerate them very well.

Once the nail caps are applied, they remain in place for approximately 4-6 weeks. They will fall off with your cats natural nail growth.

They are completely safe, painless, non-toxic, and the glue is harmless as well. Even if they are swallowed, they just pass through the digestive system with no resulting problems.

Recommended for cats over 6 months of age.

Mat and Pelt Removal

Removal of mats and pelts is a difficult process that requires extra time and precision to complete. It is a very slow process to perform the delicate procedure.

The service cost for a badly matted full coat shave and severe pelt removal starts at $220.

Total price is dependent on the time and complexity of the grooming service.

Extra services include:

  • Lion Clip: Close body shave to the skin. Legs and head left natural. Tail can either be left natural, or lion tail which is shaved leaving a tuft at the tip.

  • Comb Clip: Body clip from 1cm – 1inch length. Legs, head and tail left natural.

  • Hygiene Shave: Close shave to the skin inside the groin area, and base of tail, including bottom.

  • Belly Shave: Hygiene areas, plus belly width, up to and including armpits.

  • Paw Tidy: Paw pad shave and toe tuft tidy.

  • Soft Paws nail caps.

Cat Grooming Myths

Short Hair cats don’t need grooming

Short hair cats shed A LOT. Deshed treatments that include a bath, blow dry and complete brush out, are our most popular service, and can reduce shedding by 80%. Regular deshed treatments ensure less hair shed around the house, on furniture, and on your clothing. Professional grooming also aids in allergy prevention, and avoids problems with feline hairballs.

Cats don’t like water

Most cats tolerate water very well, and even enjoy it. The bath is the stage of the groom that can calm even the most anxious cat. A professionally trained groomer, who has the correct equipment, tools and products, and who knows how to handle cats, is a very different experience for your pet, in comparison to owners bathing their pets at home.

Cats don’t like the blow dryer

Like any new experience, it can take a few moments for your cat to get used to the sound and sensation of the dryer. The dryer is introduced slowly, and we use happy hoodies to cover your pet’s ears to muffle the sound and avoid airflow in the ears. Most cats will settle into the process and find this stage of the groom very relaxing.

My cat is too old

The grooming needs of senior or elderly cats change as they age. As a cat ages the level of oils in their skin increases, and due to lack of mobility, self grooming decreases. It is common for them to develop matting, thick nails and other problems that may not have been present earlier in their lives.

Regular grooming can resolve these issues and help to maintain good health. Grooming techniques on senior cats may be modified, as the completed groom is focused on the welfare of the cat, not on perfect aesthetic outcomes.
